Audubon Speaker to Discuss Falkland Islands Research Cruise!

A retired University of Georgia biologist will describe his adventures as a naturalist aboard an expedition ship that visited the Falkland Islands when the Oconee Rivers Audubon Society holds its next meeting, at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, at Sandy Creek Nature Center.

Gary Kochert will present an illustrated talk, “A Voyage to the Falkland Islands,” about his trip as a naturalist on the MS Polar Star expedition ship from Tierra del Fuego to the Falklands, an archipelago in the South Atlantic Ocean about 300 miles east of South America.

Kochert, who taught biology at UGA for 35 years, will describe the voyage and seabirds he and his shipmates encountered en route on board the MS Polar Star, which was originally commissioned as an icebreaker in the Swedish navy before being converted into an expedition ship. Kochert also will explain the geology and natural history of the island chain and discuss his visits to penguin and albatross rookeries on the islands.

Hope to see all of you there!
