The Common Yellowthroat
Geothlypis trichastyphicola
A familiar warbler of Georgia, the
Common Yellowthroat is the emblem of our chapter of
the National Audubon Society,
established in 1991.
Yellowthroats are voracious insect eaters, preying on leaf-eating types such as caterpillars and garden pests like aphids. They like marshy places, and make a nest of grasses, sedges, bark, and ferns that are sometimes attached to reeds, cattails and other marsh plants.
The Yellowthroat song is a distinctive "wichity, wichity, wichity." Click the photo to hear it! |
